Virtual and Augmented Reality

Augmented Reality in the Library

What is augmented reality?

Unlike virtual reality, which requires you to inhabit an entirely virtual environment, augmented reality uses your existing natural environment and simply overlays virtual information on top of it. As both virtual and real worlds harmoniously coexist, users of augmented reality experience a new and improved natural world where virtual information is used as a tool to provide assistance in everyday activities. (The Ultimate Guide to Augmented Reality)

The Library has two augmented reality viewers you can use. Note that you will need to use your smart phone along with the viewer. Library Staff can help you set this up.

How can you use Augmented Reality?

  1. View Virtual Reality Videos
  2. Use Google Expeditions to explore locations around the world. Use the What is Google Expeditions resource page to get started. Note that you can use Google Expeditions without the goggles to show the locations in panoramic view.
