Best Practices at FVCC for Preventing Plagiarism

Here are some helpful tips and best practices for encouraging academic honesty in the classroom and reducing the chances for plagiarism:

  • Invite the Library or the Writing Center into your classroom to discuss plagiarism and academic honesty.
  • Design an academic honesty quiz.
  • Have students come up with a collective definition of plagiarism. (This is also a good discussion board exercise/prompt for online courses.)
  • Use a source evaluation checklist with your Librarian for research assignments.
  • Invite the Writing Center into your classroom to conduct an MLA or APA workshop.
  • FVCC policy on academic integrity should be followed. Be sure to read our College Regulations
  • Use a rubric that places emphasis on correct and appropriate citation.

If you would like to work on creating an assignment that informs or builds awareness on the topic of academic honesty, email the Writing Center at jsoular@fvcc.edu to start the discussion.
